About Cork Leather

Why is cork environmentally friendly?
Cork is a renewable resource, and no tree or animal has to die for it to be harvested. Cork oaks can be stripped every 7 years and live for up to 150 years.
Every year, the Mediterranean cork oak forests, covering an area of 2.3 million hectares, bind approximately 14 million tons of CO2. Cork oaks also store up to 30% more CO2 than other trees.
Cork is the future!
Cork bags make you a trendsetter, because the trend towards more sustainability is also reflected in the fashion world.
The days when leather bags and fur coats were popular are over, and with good reason, because fashion can also be without animal and environmental suffering.

How is cork leather made?

Our cork leather is produced using traditional craftsmanship.
The inner layer of the peeled bark from Portugal is used to make wine corks, for example. The outer parts are mostly used for floor coverings.
Only the middle layer, if it meets the manufacturer's high quality requirements, can be used to create our cork leather.
The harvested barks are stacked on top of each other outside for several months. During this time, the bark continues to mature and stabilize.
After about half a year, the cork is cleaned with hot steam. This step gives the cork bark its flexibility. The bark is then pressed into a large sheet, which is then cut into very thin layers.
These layers are then glued to a carrier material, which is usually cotton, with a natural and organic adhesive.
The natural grain of the cork is always retained, resulting in very interesting and, above all, unique patterns.
What does cork leather feel and behave like?
Cork is very pleasantly soft and supple. It is flexible, adaptable, warm and particularly light.
When you first get your new bag, it will be a bit firmer, but over time it will soften and mold to you, much like real animal leather.
The cork has a velvety soft and warm surface.
The main difference is that cork is warmer than leather.
